A wood computer armoire combines old world craftsmanship with the best of the digital age. Computing has a terse relationship with the older forms of work, but an armoire can successfully meld the two. An armoire is an old style writing desk with a retractable cover.
The wood computer armoire was originally borne of people’s need to utilize existing furniture. The personal computer became popular in the developed world in the 1990’s, but there was no sub-culture around it yet, and so there were no designated pieces of computer furniture. The industry responded eventually, but in the meantime people were busy re-purposing their old writing desks.
Thus the first wood computer armoires were just writing desks that were used to store a computer so that it didn’t clash with the existing décor of the room. Eventually armoires were outfitted with cable routing holes, power strips, and other computer essentials. And that is how we arrived at the rebirth of an old furniture style for modern times.
